Every summer at Wildwood on Round Lake, Granny would call Bud and Joyce Turnbull at their raspberry farm just down the road — about a quarter mile past Butch Wardenga’s place, on the right — to ask if the berries were ready. When they were, she’d load up the grandkids and drive out to pick up the raspberries, then bring everyone back to her kitchen at Wildwood to can them together. Come Christmas, those little jars went to the kids’ teachers — a truly handmade gift, made by the children themselves. Granny was always thinking of someone else, and she passed that gift on too.
